Cross Cultural Music, Song & Dance on the banks of the Bann.

Albert Baxter

The 1stPortglenone Presbyterian Music Team is led by Amy McWhirter. Amy is a full-time primary school teacher, who also works part-time as Director of Music in the Church. She provides the lead at the grand piano, accompanied each week by a selection of the 19-strong praise team, all of whom serve on a voluntary basis. Typically, as well as the pianist, there will be a drummer, guitarist, bass guitarist, violinist, flautist, an electronic keyboard player and two or three vocalists. While this group sometimes sings and plays to the congregation, their chief role is in leading the whole congregation in worship through the singing of a wide range of Christian songs – from good old hymns that have been loved for centuries right through to the very best of contemporary Christian music.

For special events the praise group is occasionally joined by a 30-strong vocal choir – also trained by Amy McWhirter. The hard-working sound & vision engineers, Derek Bell and Paul McCaughern, are invaluable members of the team. Albert Baxter, their Minister, claims no musical abilities, but is happy to encourage in the background!

The Team has been delighted to be involved in the Gig’n the Bann for a long number of years, providing some music around the fringes, but especially in running the Praise’n the Bann session on the Main Street each Sunday evening of the festival. All team members are local Portglenone people who love and serve the Lord, and who have a great affection for the village and people of Portglenone. They count it a privilege to be involved in the Gig’n the Bann.
