Canntaireachd

While the judges are deciding the "Young Musician of the Bann" the audience will be kept entertained by ‘Canntaireachd’. The name is Scottish Gaelic for the oral transmission of tunes employed traditionally in passing on piping tunes and it survives to this day through sung piobaireachd and Canntaireachd. The Armagh Pipers Club and the Killeen Pipe Band have come together to form this unique group composed of uilleann pipes, highland pipes, sung piobaireachd, cello and percussion. Special pipes based on a 17th Century design have been commissioned from Scottish pipe maker Hamish Moore. These are tuned in ‘A’ which enables the different pipes to play together. We are delighted to welcome the group to the festival to showcase this unique concept.
