McKibbin Brothers
Lachlan and Murdoch McKibbin are two remarkable
brothers from Newtownards, County Down, who have become prominent figures in
the Belfast traditional music scene. Growing up immersed in the rich musical
heritage of their local area, they have also taken some influence of Scottish
music from their mother. The McKibbin brothers have honed their craft from an
early age, competing in Fleadhs and actively participating in Comhaltas
Ceoltóirí Éireann. Lachlan McKibbin is an accomplished Uilleann Piper and
Whistle player, whose dedication to his craft has recently earned him the
prestigious title of All Ireland Senior Uilleann Pipes Champion, as well as the
All Ireland Senior Uilleann Pipes Slow Airs Competition at the 2024 All Ireland
Fleadh in Wexford. His mastery of these traditional instruments and his deep
connection to Irish heritage shine through in every performance. Lachlan is
also in the final stages of completing his accountancy exams, balancing his
musical pursuits with his academic goals. Murdoch McKibbin, an exceptional
fiddle player complements Lachlan's musicianship with his own intricate style
and passion for traditional Irish music. In addition to his musical talents,
Murdoch is a qualified junior doctor, skillfully balancing his medical career
with his love for music. Together, Lachlan and Murdoch revive and reinterpret
traditional tunes with fresh creativity while mentoring the next generation of
musicians in their community. Their impact extends beyond Ireland, with
performances across Europe. Looking ahead, they plan to release an album that
blends history, heritage, and contemporary flair, ensuring the spirit of Irish
music endures.
